I had chance for a quick catch up with drummer Michael Miley of Rival Sons before they head out on their latest European stint. Rival Sons have gone from strength to strength and even finished last year by winning the Classic Rock Awards Best Breakthrough Band. They are definitely leaving a dent in every path they cross and if you haven´t heard of these guys already, You soon will.
How did Rival Sons start out?
I was looking for a gig, and a friend told me to call Scott. We started with another bass player, but I had just played with Robin at a jazz gig we were doing for Isaac Hayes for a Hurricane Katrina benefit. I knew we’d need a bass player with chops and a deep knowledge of soul, R&B, and jazz. A couple years later, we added Jay to the mix; the rest is history.
Where did the name come from?
Scott and Jay came up with it.
Who are your inspirations?
Personally, I love jazz, Frank Zappa and Steely Dan.
what music did you listen to growing up?
Lots of Steely Dan, Cream, The Beatles and Eagles
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is like taking a Motown drummer like Marvin Gaye and putting him on Keith Moon’s drum kit.
Where has been your favorite place to perform so far?
Geez. I love Scandinavia. The UK. I mean, Europe is awesome. Canada’s great too. So is Japan. I guess I don’t have a bias.
Are you looking forward to the upcoming European dates?
Couldn’t be happier. Europe is now like a second home!
If you could spend a day with one person, dead or alive….Who would it be?
Jeff Porcaro. Drummer from Toto.
And finally, one for fun….
Whats your favorite ice cream flavor?
Thanks for taking time out to speak to us here at Phoenix and have a blast on the tour.
