Its October 15th 2013, Its opening night of the Goo Goo Dolls Magnetic UK tour at the awesome Rock City in Nottingham and I spy hoards of young people queuing outside, it looks like a possible sell out, until I find out that there is another gig that same night. I thought everyone looked a tad too young to even know who The Goo Goo Dolls are.
We pile in and to my surprise we get on the 3rd row from the barrier and we arrived as the doors opened. Rock City isn’t a very large venue and it didn’t appear to be filling up either. At this point…I was praying that it wasn’t going to be an embarrassing turn out but those thoughts soon disappeared as by the time Flesh For Lulu had finished their set.
Flesh For Lulu definitely got the crowd prepared, The band are no strangers to this and showed their experience and skill all the way through their set.
Before the crowd knew it, The Goo Goo Dolls were present and ready to rock the f**k out. The band knocked out a 20 song set list, full of some right beauts.
The show kicked off with Last Hot Night before rocking into Slide, which had the crowd singing along in no time. The band worked their way through Naked, Here is Gone, their latest single Rebel Beat, which surprisingly all the crowd knew word for word followed by another new track When The World Breaks Your Night off their new album Magnetic.
Black Balloon was up next and out of nowhere some black balloons appeared, I believe some fans on the rail bought them in and the crowd followed suit by knocking the balloons around passing to one and another and even Rzeznik joined in whilst singing. From Smash, January Friend, Let Love In, Cuz You´re Gone, Come To Me, Name, Another Second Time Around, Bringing On The Light, Better Days, Stay With You, to (the one that the crowd were eager to hear all night) Iris and ending on Broadway. They came back on for an encore of a cover of Give A Little by Supertramp, which was very special indeed and a sweet treat for the adoring fans.
It was a total delight from the start right through to the end. They showed that they may be older but can still put on an absolute rock show bursting with energy that totally ROCKED Rock City!
