It was small, sweaty and rocking in the Bodega Social Club in Nottingham on March 1st when Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke rode into town to play a sold out show.
Support came in the form of Million Dollar Reload, who didn’t fail to amaze the on looking crowd. I hadn’t heard of these guys before but when they were done, they had definitely made a new fan out of me. Gritty rock n roll from Ireland at its best and by their sound you wouldn’t of realized that they were so close to home.Straight up Rock n Roll with killer riffs that sounds like its come straight from the streets of New York city.
The crowd was heated and ready for the main attraction and before we knew it, Blackberry Smoke walked onto the stage to a mass of cheers and screams.
The band kicked things off with Leave A Scar from the bands latest album `The Whippoorwill´ to the crowd’s delight, which set the tone for the night ahead. The band then took you back to 2003 with `Testify´ which was from their album `Bad Luck Ain´t No Crime´
With full steam ahead…Six Ways To Sunday was up and by this point, the crowd were drunk with a whole lot of Southern Country rhymes and catchy riffs. The band worked their way through a 17 song set list which included, Good One Comin´ On, Crimson Moon, Pretty Little Lie, Sleeping Dogs, She´s Mine, Whippoorwill through to Shakin´Hands With the Holy Ghost, Up In Smoke, Aint Got The Blues, Payback, One Horse Town and Aint Much Left Of Me.
Starr turned to the crowd and admitted that the band weren’t going to leave the stage as they had nowhere to go, He continued by asking the crowd to act like you normally would when wanting an encore.
The crowd obliged.
The band closed with Sanctified and Shake Your Magnolia and before we knew it, it was all over with too soon.
The band is known for mixing gospel, bluegrass and rock to outshine any Country Outlaw which they did splendidly and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, They do it ever so brilliantly live.
There was definitely a fire in the hole as they blew the crowd away and I highly recommend that you visit the church of Blackberry Smoke and sing your sins away soon…..
